The GAME Plan

Over the course of my teaching career I have set many goals. During the school year I have taken great pride in achieving the goals I had set. An area that I am now focused on improving is using technology to enrich my students learning environment. A way that plan to make this happen is by using “The Game Plan” explained in the book “Technology Integration for Meaningful Classroom Use a Standards-Based Approach” by Cennamo, Ross and Ertmer. I will also be choosing two NETS*T standards that I would like to improve on.

The first standard I will be improving is 1b “engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources” (ISTE, 2008). The second standard will be 5c “evaluate and reflect on current research and professional practice on a regular basis to make effective use of existing and emerging digital tools and resources in support of student learning” (ISTE, 2008).

The “GAME Plan” starts with setting a Goal. My goal for 1b would be to find ways to use this standard in my content area. For 5c my goal would be to be more diligent in finding research on emerging and existing tools that can benefit my students in the classroom.

The next step in the “GAME Plan” is to tell what Action I will be taking to ensure that I achieve the goals I have set. For NETS*T standard 1b I will develop a Web Quest that will have students exploring the fast food that we Americans eat. The main goal will be for students to find a healthy meal at a popular fast food chain.
As for standard 5c I will work with my districts staff development team to ensure that all teachers are afford the opportunity to explore and learn about

Once I have set the Action part of my “GAME Plan” into affect I would then move into the Monitoring stage. A way that I would monitor standard 1c would be by conferencing with each student as they completed their Web Quest. By seeing how each student is doing I am able to help them with the technology and guide them in the learning process. For standard 5c I would ask other teachers to take part of a survey on the staff development courses that were offered on emerging technologies. By developing a survey I will be able to tell what is helping teachers.

The final part of my “GAME Plan” would be to Evaluate and Extend. I would blog my findings for both standards. This would help me and other teachers. I will be able to get feed back from others which would aid me in changing what didn’t work and what did.

As a teacher I take great pride in improving my teaching. By taking the time to use and implement the GAME Plan I am insuring that progress will take place. I look forward to hearing your responses.

  1. I can relate to you since you chose one of the same standards for your self-directed learning as I did. The goal I chose is under Standard 1, Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity, b. engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources (International Society for Technology in Education, 2008). I thought that since this impacts so many students and teachers that this should be the top goal of mine to develop and support as I develop my GAME Plan (Cennamo, Ross, & Ertmer, 2009). I like how you gave examples of what you were going to do each step of the way with your goal. Using the WebQuest is an excellent example of providing students with real-world activities even though they may not actually be able to be physically present at these places. I have always enjoyed using them and years ago created a class that taught teachers how to create them. What an adventure for me and for them. Are you thinking of co-teaching with this? I see potential as the consumer science and the health teacher work together!

  2. Marilyn,

It is funny that you ask if I would be co-teaching this lesson. I in fact have spoken with the health teacher and we are going to be getting together in August and plan how we both can incorporate the teaching of fast food.

  3. Allison,

I think a Web Quest is a great way to help students achieve your goals and objectives for them. In addition, it would help you work towards proficiency on standard 1b (ISTE, 2008). Talk about real world problems, obesity and heart disease run rampant in our society and a learning activity of this magnitude would truly engage students in understanding and solving real world issues.

  4. Allison, engaging students in exploring real world issues using digital tools is essential in today's learning environment. Student's of this generation want to be able to connect their topic of study to real life issues. I would suggest using collaborative databases. Students enjoy working with their peers. "The goal is to engage students as scientists in the problem-solving process"(Cennamo, Ross, & Ertmer, 2009).
I like to see teachers who take pride in improving their teaching stratgies. It shows that you care about your students and the need to improve their learning environment.

As educators our only aim as we enter our classroom is for the advancement of our students. Your selection for attaining you GAME Plan appears to be student oriented. As Cennamo, Ross, and Ertmer suggest plans made with students success in mind is guaranteed to achieve its goal.

As you work with work with your GAME Plan and others provided by the writers you are sure to be seeing imorovement in your students' output.

  6. It seems as though we are thinking on the same wave length. Scary! I am happy to hear that you are collaborating. Sometimes I notice that when students see two teachers working on a topic or concept they seem to be more engaged and interested. Could it be that when they see that they think that it is super important? I am not sure. That would be a great research question.....are students more engaged when there is co-teaching involved?

  7. Hi Allison,

I like the fast food web quest. I think that kids need to know the negative impact of eating fast food on a regular basis. Furthermore, not only for their health, this activity will teach them researching skills that they will be able to use for a lifetime. I know that you had mentioned that the students will find a healthy meal at a popular fast food chain; are you going to have the students create a final project as well? I think having the students create a presentation using technology would be a great final product where the students could synthesize what they have learned about what types of foods are at fast food chains. Let me know what you think! Great Ideas!
